SPRING 2023 COHORT

About This Cohort

This cohort was designed for those new to leadership in older adult ministry. It was an opportunity to study, exchange ideas, and grow with peers who are also in the initial stages of their ministry with older adults. The cohort helped participants fashion and grow effective ministries for their own unique settings. In addition, cohort members addressed concerns, issues, and burning questions that are of interest to them.

Leadership

​This cohort was coached by Sandy Safford. Sandy is an experienced and engaging coach who has led a variety of cohorts. She has been a Faith Formation leader for twenty five-plus years and serves as commissioned lay pastor of a small rural congregation in Colorado. Sandy loves coaching and living in Colorado.

Course Format

The study group consisted of 5 to 8 people who met for six 90-minute sessions. Group members selected their own area of focus and develop individualized goals designed to cultivate their older adult ministry. Group members could:

• plan a special event
• design a study series
• organize a new area of service
• discover methods to face a challenging topic such as racism
• connect with an age group like Boomers, or
• create a unique opportunity.

The coach guided and facilitated each session, fostered a positive environment for exchanges and conversation, and provided feedback for individual projects. Participants were expected to be active partners in learning: supporting, guiding, and resourcing the group and to attend each session.

Who Should Join This Cohort

The cohort was open to POAMN members and non-members who are new leaders in older adult ministry (fewer than three years experience).

This program was a partnership between POAMN and the Presbyterian Mission Agency’s Office of Christian Formation.
